Perhaps because it is an older English pronunciation?  Shakespeare's Maria in _Twelfth Night_ is so pronounced.

Oh yes, I've never heard the police van pronounced any other way. No doubt for that reason I have always called the character in BM "Mar-EYE-ah" too, although it also has a slightly old-fashioned feeling that suits her.
