There's also that scene where she's a university student and goes out to
buy Tom's record as proof he existed, and then she's are looking at it at
home, and is suddenly shocked because she realises that Tom is much closer
in age to her than she had thought and is actually a young man.

I just got the book off the shelf and here's the section

"But the thing which gave Polly the greatest shock was to see that Thomas
Lynn was nothing like as old as she had thought.

She turned  the record over and took a bewildered look at the notes …

… When Polly had first met him, she suspected he must have been so bleached
and drained from the struggle to get divorced from Laurel that she had
taken him for an old man, as children do …

… Instead of which, he was young, with a career in the making"
