Hello all,

I've just been reading a somewhat mangled typescript draft of 'Howl's Moving Castle' - it's a photocopy, annotated with revisions and missing numerous pages throughout. Diana sent it to her agent, Laura Cecil, to show her all the cuts and revisions her editor suggested for the book and to illustrate how ridiculous the editorial suggestions were. She doesn't seem to have taken editorial criticism terribly well! Although, to be fair, the story makes a great deal less sense in the edited form - huge chunks of the action have been removed, and many of the revisions suggested in the annotations are extraordinarily trivial, serving to sufficiently disrupt the flow of Diana's style without adding substantially to the story.

Needless to say, after having had a bit of laugh about it with Laura Cecil, Diana refused to make the changes and the book was published as per her original draft. Fortunately, her editor seems to have given in gracefully!
