	To such a degree, looking back still further, that medieval and  
early modern images of school teachers can be often be easily  
identified because the teacher holds a whip or a stick, in addition  
to a text. This is particularly true of personifications of Grammar,  
the first of the trivium of the liberal arts.  Here's one of the
