You're right, Tolkien inspires the story where the Obah Cypt is an evil ring, and it's David Bragge who tells her to read it, not Tom Lynn. The silken skin one is inspired by Twelfth Night. I found the correct bits of F&H via google books. Amazing what the internet can do!

In my head she wishes him ill for the sentimental drivel postcard, then writes the ring-story, and then he damages his cello, writes again and then apologises for being terse? Unless the ring story is the silken skin one, which it might well be.
