Well, new-ish would be Scalzi's adult SF novel, _Old Man's War_, if you
find some military SF readable. Scalzi also has a YA book _Zoe's Tale_
in the same universe coming out soon, it stands alone but Old Man's War
is a backstory for it. There are sequels to OMW, so it's not brand new.
Well, Zoe's Tale is. And it's had some favorable early reviews, if
that counts for anything.
I mention these because of the requirement for "engages you quickly".
