Mrs Coulter might be an example. (I'm still terrified of her, and I
haven't read His Dark Materials in years.) In her case, Lyra is raised
by 'foster' parents who, while on the inattentive side, care more
about her than either of her real parents. HDM could be sort of
unusual in that respect.
