Were the Israelites so called in contrast to the other tribes that got
lost, perhaps?

It might have something to do with the way that these days "ite" has a
slightly negative feel to it.  You can tell when a politician becomes
unpopular because his or her followers, doctrines and policies start to be
called "ites" and "ite": cf Thatcherite and Blairite.  This did not happen
with for instance Churchill, Wilson, Heath or Major.  I note with interest
that the followers of Gordon Brown are "Brownites" already in the popular
parlance.
