That's probably a good way to describe a lot of the books that make it to the best-seller lists for no apparant reason.

Last night I went to see Split Enz, and whilst watching the support band, I
figured out how to describe The Da Vinci Code.
It's like a catchy pop song. The melody is derivative, the lyrics are just
plain awful, but if you hear it on the radio you'll sing along. When you
compare it to really good songs, it doesn't hold up (you'd never buy the
album), but it's diverting enough to listen to for three minutes when
you're driving to the supermarket.
(my two cents)
