As I said, I'd never seen the Rainbow Fish in English. So on Saturday,
I asked a friendly bookseller. She didn't have it in stock, but said
(and I paraphrase):
It's a lovely book. It's about belonging. He's boring, and has to
hide, so the other fish each give him something of themselves, and he
becomes a rainbow fish.
Are we talking about the same book here?
The idea of it being "about belonging" would certainly fit but the rest?
FWIW, I've never really "belonged" anywhere, with a few exceptions (this
list being one), so a book about belonging might mean something
different to me compared with most people.
