I've been using "curate's egg" for years (in my head, anyway; no point
using it in conversation if people don't know what it means).

It was a while before I discovered where it came from, though; I
picked it up from 'Bulldog Drummond', in which the hero uses the
expression to describe a night spent as the houseguest of the villain.

"Hold fast to the one noble thing."
