I think Ista is quite possibly Bujold's best character. It is my 
admiration of her (and that book) that made me so pissed off about the 
Hallowed Hunt and that stupid Sharing Knife book. I feel like she needs 
some teacherly person to say to her "you can do better than this. Should 
try harder."
