Buttons is a character in the pantomime version of "Cinderella", which is
probably why you've not come across him. He's a servant of some kind, and
gets his name from his jacket with buttons all up the front. He is Cinders'
friend and confidant, and is in love with her, but nobly steps back to let
her marry the Prince.

Nor longer stay in your curst company.
Your hands than mine are quicker for a fray;
My legs are longer though to run away."
