Rugby match, Melissa, Rugby match. On this side of the Atlantic, football == soccer, and you'd never get a soccer match in Wales generating angry mobs. In England, yes, but in Wales no.
I've always liked the idea that "ways through" exist around the world, hidden in various places, and that we can stumble upon them and be transported to Somewhere Else.
I tend towards the view that Howl found such a way through and ended up in Ingary. He could well have been fleeing from an angry mob of rugger fans, although I wouldn't have thought that would happen until after he'd learned magic, and tried to influence the outcome of a game with it ;-) I don't know how he started studying magic, but he was taken on by Mrs Pentstemmon "in his student days", so probably before he did his PhD on spells.
(Curious piece of linguistic shuffling. Over here you do a dissertation for your master's, and a thesis for your doctor's degree. In the US it's the other way around. For some reason.)
