Off-hand I can't think of any particular technology of slaughter that
was used during the land battles of the ACW that hadn't been in use
elsewhere, apart from some of the more specialised kinds of shell. It
was certainly the largest war around for quite some time and involved a
lot more mass-production than any war before it had. There was quite a
bit more naval innovation, mind...

But I should love to hear the official answer.
