And let us not forget an old favourite on this list, Elizabeth Marie Pope's *The Perilous Gard.* I wonder whether some Peter Ackroyd might not qualify, too, though he's not usually thought of as a fantasy writer. It's a while since I read *In the House of Dr Dee* but I think there were fantasy elements there.
