I can't find the message now from Judith to respond to, but I've just come
across another explanation for the etymology of
lickerish/licorice/liquorice: from the Latin name for the plant which is
used to make licorice extract, Glycyrrihiza Glabra: glyks=sweet, rhiza=root.

I don't think this actually contradicts your "lickerish" etymology, both
versions could conceivably be true.
