As children we had a set of encyclopedias (published
c. 1960) with this on every volume, it always
impressed me and is possibly why I became a librarian.

Have you read his "Discourses on Livy"? something of a
contrast to the Prince, and possibly an expression of
his true beliefs - in which case "The Prince" must be
treated as a satire.
