Ain't it always the way? You go for years without a good dirge, and then
several come along at once. I just came across our old friend 'Fire and
fleet' again, in a book by an author DWJ is known to admire, Joan Aiken's
_The Cockatrice Boys_ (1996). Good book, by the way - it would be
interesting to put next to Geraldine McCaughrean's _The Stones are
Hatching_, as visions of a Britain where ancient folk monsters have come
back to life and devastated the land.
