A "Maggid" (sometimes spelled other ways in English) is a (usually
itinerarnt) Jewish preacher or teacher popular in Europe, though not used
now as a contemporoary term, AFAIK. I've often wondered if DWJ may have seen
this term somewhere and decided to use it for her Maggids. It's pronouced
"MAH-ggid" and is a Hebrew word.
