The dictionary I've got here (nothing as grand as the OED) says it's 15thC,
originally spelt 'philippe', and 'of imitative origin'. Imitating what? The
sound of someone doing the witchy dance, it seems - the action of flicking
your fingers like that is one of the definitions listed.
