Another odd framing device I've encounted is the one in _Prince Ombra_
by Roderick MacLeish:
The prologue is the foreword to an account of the events in the novel
written by one of the participants, and the epilogue is the afterword
to the same account - but the bit in between is not the account
"Hold fast to the one noble thing."
