I would recommend:

DWJ - Fire and Hemlock (although I'm just now finishing up "Witch Week" and 
I think it's the best of the Chrestomanci books, and a fabulous tale in its 
own right)

Non-DWJ - Good Omens (Gaiman and Pratchett)
