There's an interesting article contrasting CS Lewis with Frank
Baum on Salon.com.
The writer prefers Lewis to Baum (with reservations about the
Christianity) and British children's literature to American on the
grounds of greater toughness and realism. The letters in reply are
of interest too -- one comments that it's difficult to explain some of
Lewis' predjudices to today's children, and one includes Dwj with
Pratchett and Gaiman as the best British fantasy authors.

If all the good people were clever,
And all clever people were good,
The world would be nicer than ever
We thought that it possibly could.
