Sometime in the 1980's, Massachusetts gave out a bunch of bumper
stickers promoting the state as an economic hot spot, which given
decades of prior stagnation was real news. The bumper stickers said:
MAKE IT IN MASSACHUSETTS.
New Hampshire, just to the north and with no income or sales taxes,
promptly rolled out a second one that fit right under the first,
SPEND IT IN NEW HAMPSHIRE.
It's still one of my favorite comeback lines, despite what I think
about NH state government...
