This is "Elsie Piddock Skips in Her Sleep", by Eleanor Farjeon. It comes
from the story-collection-in-a-narrative-wrapper _Martin Pippin in the Daisy
Field_, in which Martin tells a story and sings a song to each of six little
girls (and one baby). This is a sequel of sorts to _Martin Pippin in the
Apple Orchard_, in which Martin tells stories and sings to young women in an
apple orchard-- future mothers of the little girls of Daisy Field.

Farjeon's way out of fashion, but I like her very much. I reread her
autobiographic _A Nursery in the Nineties_ every few years, and I yearn to
see the panto version of _The Silver Curlew_. Has anyone here seen it?

Mary Ann

P.S. I don't know the boy with the torch, though.

I beg the indulgence of the list in trying to find a short story featuring
Andy Spandy Sugardy Candy and a fairy skipping rope he gave to a little
girl.
