Or perhaps, for some children, their perceptions of the world are so
self-centred that "the good mother" just appears when required, smoothing,
calming and loving, then disappears from their view when the disturbances
are over and they return to their own activities.

This is not to say that the parent hasn't got an interesting life or isn't
involved enough with her children, just that the child's POV is such that
until she's needed the mother doesn't make much impact.
