Apart from that "Clever Gretchen" story (how do you pronounce Gretchen,
btw ;) Britta asks again), there is also the really amazing "The
Ordinary Princess" by M.M.Kaye, and she gets turned out for

....well, she doens't get turned out, but runs away because her father
wants her to marry, but the suitors don't like her ordinariness (does
that word exist?), so her father wants to put her in a tower guarded by
a dragon and promise her to her "rescuer". She has mousegray hair, btw,
and blue eyes, and is called Amy (short for Amethyst ...)
