I think that "Byronic hero" is rather like the guy in Wuthering Heights--dark 
and brooding.  With a deep, secret, hidden past and an anguished unknown 

However, it's become almost a cliche in many romances--to quote a satire "a 
man with a past but no future--"  After a while, there is almost something 
theatrical and fake about the Byronic hero.  Someone once described him as 
"standing on a papier mache rock with a wind machine blowing his cloak . . "
